Saving gasoline in the city is something essential in these times, since with how expensive life is, saving fuel is a relief in our economy.

Although we know that gasoline and oil have fallen lately, gasoline is still a very expensive good that exceeds the euro per liter. This price is quite high for the usual use that we give to the car, since if we drive an average of 10 kilometers a day, we are spending 1 liter per day if our car uses 10 liters per 100.

Therefore, saving gasoline is essential. When we want to save gasoline outside the city, following a couple of recommendations and maintaining speed is worth it.  However, in a city it is not so easy, since the changes of rhythm, the dense traffic and the stops make the car a true fuel-consuming machine.

In the end, driving in the city is usually twice as expensive as driving on the highway. Therefore, even if we only take the car to go to work and little else, we are going to have a large gas bill at the end of the month.

Luckily, there are some tips and tricks that will allow you to save gasoline in the city, being able to spend less money traveling the same kilometers. If you follow these tips, you can save 25% more gasoline per month, something that although it may not seem like much, it is if we look at the long term.

If you want to start saving on gasoline, you are in the right place, since I will teach you right now how to save gasoline in the city.

This article is also useful if you have another type of vehicle that is not a car, be it a motorcycle, a truck or even a moped, since the operation of the gearbox and the engine are quite similar.

Instructions to save gasoline in the city

  1. Long marches: The first thing we must do when it comes to saving gasoline in the city is to take into account the operation of the gearbox. When we drive in low gears, the engine revs more easily than if we drive in high gears, since the route is shorter.  For this reason, we must practice what I call efficient driving, that is, we must drive with the highest gears possible in the city to rev the vehicle as little as possible. In this way, the car will go less revved up and the fuel consumption will be much lower, that is, do not have the car drowned or it will be worse. In these cases, you should know how your car works and when it can go to a certain gear, since it depends on the length. Some cars can go to fifth gear at 80 kilometers per hour and others need to go 120 kilometers per hour.
  2. Avoid braking and changes of rhythm: From what we have already explained in section 1, the car uses more gasoline when there are high revs. When we brake and change pace, we have to downshift and upshift, which will inevitably cause the car to rev too high. For this reason, you must drive at the speed allowed on the road, without going too fast to avoid sudden braking at traffic lights. Speaking of traffic lights, try to anticipate when they turn red by slowing down slightly as you approach them, to make the speed transition slower and therefore more fuel efficient than changing gears too hard.
  3. Avoid driving through dense traffic: As we said in the previous section, the downside of driving in the city is that there are changes of pace. Although many times they can be avoided, on other occasions not. This happens when we have too dense traffic, since this forces us to brake very abruptly and therefore, to exceed the revolutions of the vehicle and spend more fuel. Some tricks to avoid catching the dense traffic is to avoid the center of the cities, taking advantage of special lanes such as roads and interurban highways such as the M-30 in Madrid to carry out these tasks. You can also skirt the city and reach your destination using the surrounding roads, but that will depend on how close you are to them and if you have time to do so.

Tips to save gas in the city

  • Saving gasoline on the highway: As I said before, it is easier than saving it in the city, since there are fewer changes of pace. In any case, always try to drive in fifth gear, avoiding rough secondary roads and trying to avoid too much change of pace.
  • Keep the car ready: If the filters and the engine are in poor condition, the consumption of gasoline will increase. For this reason, the car must be kept in tune, so that the consumption of gasoline is more efficient and thus there can be less fuel consumption both on the highway and in the city.
