What to do to pay a traffic ticket?
In the case of Spain, the DGT is in charge of regulating traffic fines for improper parking of vehicles. The DGT are the initials that refer to the General Directorate of Traffic. This public body is in charge of “Road safety and registration information, transfers and cancellations of vehicles and obtaining and renewing the license”.
Paying a traffic ticket through the DGT is very simple. The steps that must be followed to do it voluntarily are the following:
- Payment can be made online using a credit or debit card.
- Payment can be made by contacting the DGT at the telephone number 060. In this case, as in the case of payment over the Internet, the payment must be made using a credit or debit card.
- Through a post office. In this case, the established fee must be paid.

- Through a branch of La Caixa (Caixabank). In these cases, if you are not a La Caixa customer, you must go to any branch to make the payment. Remember that the hours are Monday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. On Thursdays, in addition, there is a window service until 18:00 in the afternoon.
In order to make the payment using any of these methods, it is necessary to present the following information and documents:
- Valid DNI, passport or residence permit in Spain.
- Name and surname of the person who has to pay the fine.
- Open file number and date of the fine.
- Pay the total amount of the fine by means of the card.
Paying a traffic ticket in advance has a reward
Did you know that if you pay the fine within 20 calendar days from when you were notified of the penalty, you can benefit from a 50 percent reduction in the amount? So that’s it. All those drivers who do so in this period of time will be able to benefit from said reduction. Regardless of whether you later want to legally claim the refund of the fine. Keep in mind that according to article 67 of the Road Safety Law, it is not possible to benefit from this discount if the obligation to identify the driver responsible for having committed said offense is breached.
