The moped permit is a kind of small driving license that accredits the driving of motorized vehicles of less than 50 cubic centimeters of displacement.
Vehicles under 50 cubic centimeters include classic motorcycle-shaped mopeds, special mobility vehicles, and so-called microcars (very small, underpowered 4-wheel cars).
The moped permit is officially called the AM permit and to access it you need to be at least 15 years old, previously it was 14 years old but with the new law it has been increased by one year.
This permit can be the ideal solution for driving in the city, firstly it is less expensive than a motorcycle or driving license and secondly mopeds are cheaper, use less gasoline and are safer for kids since they do not they run too much

Instructions to get your moped permit
- Option 1 Driving school: Driving schools are teaching centers that specialize in teaching people to drive all types of vehicles, in the driving school, in addition to teaching how to drive cars, they also teach how to obtain other types of licenses such as truck or moped. You must bring a passport-size photo and pay the registration and fees, at the driving school they will teach you everything you need to pass the driving license with tests and explanations and when you pass the theory they will teach you how to drive the motorcycle by doing practical. The driving school is the most common option if you want to have the license but also the most expensive of all.
- Option 2 Free exam: There is the option of going to traffic in your city to take the exam directly by free option, you will get significant savings in fees but you will have to fill out a lot of paperwork and no one will help you pass. We recommend this option if you know how to drive the moped well and you don’t need any kind of class. As for the driving tests, you can easily obtain them on the internet.
- How are the tests: The first exam is a theoretical multiple choice exam with 20 questions of which you can only fail two. The best way to pass it is to take many driving tests to memorize the questions. When you pass this exam, you will be summoned to a test in a fenced circuit, in which you will have to pass several tests that are reminiscent of driving tests in video games like Gran Turismo, such as driving without touching cones or going through narrow places. Finally, if you pass, they will give you the permit and you will be able to drive your moped.
- Option 3 other licenses: Car licenses such as car or motorcycle A1 or A2 automatically allow you to drive mopeds without having an AM permit. If you have money and are over 15 years old, it may be better for you to obtain these licenses since then you will already have that of a superior vehicle. The A1 license can be obtained from the age of 16 and allows you to drive motorcycles of less than 125 cubic centimeters, the A2 license is from the age of 18 and allows you to drive up to 50 horsepower or motorcycles with more horsepower but limited, and the Car license B is from the age of 18 and allows you to drive cars and motorcycles up to 125 with an age of 2 years. Finally you have the A license that allows you to drive any motorcycle of any power but you need to be 21 years old.
Tips to get your moped license
- Limitations for minors under 18: When the law changed, in addition to the minimum age limit, some things were also changed for minors, the biggest change is that a minor under 18 cannot carry passengers until they reach the age of majority (not even if you drive a microcar) which can be a problem.
- What moped to buy? If you want to drive around the city, it is best to buy a basic vespino that allows you better mobility with lower fuel costs, if you want to go by road (although I do not advise long trips since you cannot go over 45 km/h ) buy a road moped. In terms of safety, the best is the microcar since it is a light quadricycle in the shape of a car, to ride through the mountains you have cross bikes such as the Pit bike which is also indicated for children or a quad of small displacement.
