As an autonomous body in Spain, the well-known DGT (General Directorate of Traffic) is responsible for ensuring compliance with road policies and road safety. For this reason and with the objective of complying with the above, the points card is available to promote the rules of good driving, road safety and ultimately punish drivers who commit offenses repeatedly.

We all want to enjoy safety on the road and for that we have to be responsible when driving and comply with the rules. In this sense, when obtaining the license, each driver with more than three years of experience will have 12 points on their record, while those who do not have the experience or have managed to recover the license again will have only 8 points. To the extent that we commit violations or not, our points will go down or up and we may want to know how to check the points with the DGT.

  1. You can check your points by creating an account and entering it by username and password:
  2. This is one of the most used methods to check the points of the driver’s license, since many do not have Cl@ve Pin or a DNI or electronic Certificate. If this is your case, we will explain in detail the steps to follow, if you get lost in any of them, read again carefully: The first thing we must do is make sure that we are connected to a computer with good Internet access or, failing that, a mobile device.
  3. Once the previous step has been carried out, we must open the browser of our choice and in the navigation bar, which remains at the top, write: “ www.dgt.es ” and press the ‘enter’ key or search to access.
  4. The previous address, as we can see, will take us to the main page of the Directorate General of Traffic. Once the page has loaded correctly, if we go down a bit we can see that the page is divided into three columns: Education and Road Safety; Procedures and Traffic and mobility.
  5. The section or column in which we will not focus to access the consultation of points will be that of “Procedures”, if you are located in it you will see that the column contains several options, such as: Prior appointment request, Information Sheets of Procedures, Your car, Vehicle Report and, fifth, How many points do I have?
  6. The fifth option will be the one that we must select by clicking on it, when clicked, in general, a new tab is opened in the browser and we must go to it.
  7. In the new tab, everything related to point permits will appear, we can read them in case we ever need to access them. The first option that appears in the list is the one that will interest us: “Points Query”.
  8. To enter, just click on the option and wait to be redirected to the Points Consultation section.
  9. When being redirected, a brief explanation of the options that are available to consult points will appear. This section explains that you can enter the system and see your balance if you have Cl@ve, with an electronic certificate or DNI and, ultimately, be able to enter the system with a key or password, as we are doing up to now.
  10. To continue with the steps we must go down to the middle of the page, in the section that is shaded and is titled: Access to Point Consultation.
  11. Once located there, we will see that we will have access to the three previous options with their respective “Help” section, we must go to the third option that says: Query Points With Username and Password.
  12. Click on the aforementioned option three, wait for the new tab to load where the information “Check the balance of points (without certificate)” will appear and fill in the information requested: NIF/NIE, Access code and code of the image, and then press “Enter” and our status of points appears.
  13. Follow these steps only if you were not able to enter, if you do not have a previous registration or if you have lost your password, you will have to register or request a new password to be able to enter the status of points.
  14. You must fill in the data, including the characters that appear in the colored image, distinguishing between upper and lower case, and then click on the yellow image with the message: Request access code to check points balance.
  15. Then, the section will appear: Access code request, there you must enter the NIF and the date of issue of the first license or driving permit and press the enter button.
  16. The next step, after confirming the data, will be to enter the personal email where you will receive the key, you must enter it twice and make sure to write it correctly, the email must be open since it will not take long to arrive.
  17. Wait to receive the email and check your inbox, copy the temporary password that is sent to you and repeat steps 1.10 and 1.11 that we explained above. It is worth mentioning that when entering the data, you will be asked to change the password to a personal one of your choice. When you change it, you just place it and the system will show you the points you have.
  18. You can access using Cl@ve: The other method is the cl@ve system, a system that is promoted to facilitate access to Public Administration services electronically. The option is offered: Cl@ve Pin for a single use and permanent Cl@ve for people who frequently enter the system, in the latter the person still has a username and password and security is reinforced with SMS codes, to enter through this means you must follow the steps: Before proceeding with the steps, you must have the Cl@ve identification mechanism, that is, you must be previously registered in the system.
  19. If you have a record in the system, you must follow the steps described in the previous form, from 1.1 to 1.9, once you are in the section: Access to Query Points, you must select Query Points with Cl@ve.
  20. You will be redirected to a tab where you can choose the identification method you want, you must click on the Cl@ve pin or Cl@ve Permanent option.
  21. Once there, all you have to do is enter the data requested to authenticate yourself and verify your identity.
  22. Finally, when entering the data, the information will be loaded and the system will show you the accumulated points and the history that you have had.
  23. You can check your points with a DNI or electronic certificate: The last option is to consult through an electronic certificate or DNI, where you must have the certificate installed in your browser to be able to enter the DGT system. This is an equally practical and interactive method that does not require much knowledge. Follow the steps to check the points with your digital certificate: You must have a valid digital certificate issued by an entity recognized by the @firma platform, including: DNIe, FNMT-Ceres, CATCERT, CAGVA, IZENPE, ANF, Camerfirma, ACA, ANCERT, Professional firm, SCR and Ministry of Defence.
  24. If you have a recognized certificate, in general, the entity that issues it shows you how to install it, so you only have to download it from the platform or install it in your browser if you have it on a storage device.
  25. Once you have the certificate installed in the browser of your choice, you must carry out the steps explained in the first way that we detail, from 1.1 to 1.9, until you locate yourself in the section: Access to Query Points.
  26. Once there, you can click on the option: Check Points With Certificate, the system will register the certificates that are present in the browser and if you have more than one you must choose the one you want to use to check the points.
