One of the most important rules that we must take into account when observing road safety for you and your children is to correctly choose the baby car seat.

According to road safety regulations, small children should not be mounted in the car in the same way as an adult, since if this happens, these children will not be properly protected. This is because road safety regulations dictate that children must carry a seat because otherwise they are not properly secured.

Imagine a car with its corresponding seat belt, a belt that if you look closely has been created for tall people, people who measure at least one meter forty centimeters. If a small child tries to use a normal seat belt, what will happen is that the dreaded underwater effect will occur, that is, that the child will slip under the belt when having an accident. or hit a brake.

Baby car seats are the solution to this, since they will protect almost all children under 12 years of age and who are not more than 1.40 meters tall. These seats are of various types and most have their own separate seat belt, since otherwise they do not protect in the correct way.

The bad thing is that with so many seats and so many brands, it is a bit difficult to know how to choose the correct seat, since road safety regulations often change and choosing a baby seat can be more complicated that way. The bad thing, apart from the obvious lack of security when choosing a wrong car seat, is that we will be facing administrative sanctions from the people of the DGT.

For this reason, today we are going to teach you in detail and step by step, how you can  correctly choose a car seat for babies and small children.

Instructions for choosing a baby car seat

  1. Look at the road safety regulations: The first reference that we must always take into account when choosing a car seat for children and babies is to take into account the corresponding traffic laws. The DGT always assigns rules of this type, telling you which is the best chair for each group of children. In this way, they will be able to ensure that the chair is suitable for the child in question, since they have carried out various studies in search of the perfect chair for a certain group. According to the general direction of traffic, there are three types of car seats, which are divided both by age and by height and weight of the child.
    1. Group 0: First of all, we find those who are really babies, that is, children in group 0.  These seats are suitable for newborn babies, who weigh less than 13 kilos and who measure 75 centimeters at most. These seats are characterized by being very similar to strollers for small children, since they have their own security and fastening system.
    2. Group 1: As for group 1, it is the next group to group 0, that is, that of children who are not babies but who are not yet too big. Here we are talking about children who have a measurement between 75 centimeters and 1 meter, weighing no more than 18 kilos. These children are usually between 2 and 5 years old and are still very short, however, we already have a chair that allows them to sit and not lie down as in baby seats.
    3. Group 2: Finally we have the group of seats for the big children, that is, children who are between 3 and 12 years old and are less than 1.40 meters tall. In this group we have two types of seats, since a child who measures 1.10 is not the same as one who is 1.40. In the case of one of 1.10, we have the classic child’s car seat, a seat that allows you to sit down and that is like a kind of supplementary seat to make it better. As for the taller child, he will simply carry a booster cushion, since only with this can he already avoid the underwater effect of the seat belt. This cushion can also be worn a little taller for safety, although it is not required.
  2. Look at the materials and the brand: Once you are clear about which baby car seat you have chosen, you must take into account its materials and the brand. This means that we must check that the chair has resistant materials, comfortable for the child and that if he has his own seat belt, it should be a belt that can withstand the impact and braking well and that prevents our son from flying through the air through the windshield.
