We define tire burn as the voluntary wear of the wheels of a vehicle, specifically the tire covers.
Although burning a wheel or burning a tire, as you prefer to call it, is not something we usually do in normal and efficient driving, it is the order of the day in competition driving, since it is very nice to see how a driver leaves the marks of the wheels making donuts.
Burning wheel is nice to see, since two things happen. First of all, smoke starts coming out, which can be colored smoke if we have painted the wheel covers one color. Secondly, the marks of the wheels will remain on the road, passing what is known as marking the territory.
This burning tire began to be done at car shows, in which the drivers began to do this to entertain the public and to demonstrate their driving skills. Then it also began to be done in street races, as a sign of mockery and domination towards the rival.
A new driving style was even created, known as drifting, a style in which we drift around corners, burning a lot of tires in the process. In this way we can take very tight corners at high speed, drastically reducing the time it takes to do the circuit in this way.
Outside of all this competition, burnout can make you the king of your friends for a while, since you will look very good before them doing donuts on the road with the car. That if, we always advise responsible driving, respecting the rules of the DGT to ensure the life of all members of the road, so we are not responsible for the misuse that you can give to this article.
Requirements
Not all cars in the world are prepared to burn a wheel, since two factors depend on this. In the first place, we have the transmission, which must always be a manual transmission, because in an automatic we cannot leave the car stuck in first gear as we do with a manual car. Therefore, if you have an automatic transmission car, this article is over for you.
It also depends on the power of the car and the gear ratio. A car to burn tires must have a lot of power in first gear, for this it must have good power and a very low gear, to rev the car as much as possible and that the acceleration is very powerful. If your car does not meet the requirements, you should also stop reading this article since you will not be able to do it correctly (although it still lets you burn a tire on a hill, the thing is to try and see if it lets you).
Finally you should have a set of wheels that is in bad shape. I advise leaving a set of bad wheels for this task, as it is foolish to ruin new wheels while doing nonsense on the road. You must also do this in a closed place, which is not on the road, because if you do it on the road, you will be committing a crime against road safety with the corresponding loss of license points and economic sanction.
Burn tire on site
The easiest way to burn a tire and the one we all know is to burn a tire on site. The way to do this is as follows; First, we put the car in neutral and push the clutch all the way in, then we engage first gear, but we’re not going to release the clutch or make any gears yet. Now instead of doing the normal gear shift by accelerating little by little, we are going to depress the clutch and the accelerator when we engage first gear. Now we are going to apply the handbrake so that the wheel is locked and we are going to release the clutch very quickly. Once we have done this, the car will send a very strong movement signal to the wheels, but they will not be able to advance because of the handbrake. As the wheels advance on the spot, a lot of smoke will start to come out of the wheels and we will have achieved the objective of burning the wheel of the car, since the friction and the kinetic energy of the wheels make this happen.
Burn tire with a strong start
Now we are going to burn the tire at the start, in the purest Need For Speed style. To make a strong start we are going to do it as if we were changing a gear as new drivers who do not have a license, that is, accelerating a lot and shifting into gear very quickly, that is, releasing the clutch very quickly. In this way, the car will be very revved up and the start will be so strong that some of the wheel will burn when leaving. The more power the car has, the more tire we’re going to burn doing this, burning a lot of tire on a low-powered car and a lot of tire on a high-powered car.
Burn tire on hill
Now we are going to burn the wheel uphill, one of the most beautiful tricks in this world as exciting as it is the world of cars and skids. To burn tire on a hill, we are simply going to put the car in neutral on an uphill. When the car starts to fall downwards, we are going to put the first gear fast and accelerate a lot. The wheel will begin to move at high speed, causing the kinetic energy to be very high and there is a movement of friction with the ground due to the difference in forces when the car falls. When this happens, smoke will come out and we will burn the wheel during the short period of time in which the energies are reversed and the car climbs upwards. The steeper the slope, the longer this guy will be and therefore the more smoke we’re going to get doing this.
Burn tire making donuts:
The donuts are a spectacular movement in which the car begins to spin on itself, burning the wheel. The way to do this is to drive in very tight circles while braking, in such a way that the wheels lose traction and the car skids. Drive in tight circles braking as you accelerate. Acceleration force should be a bit greater than brake force to get the car to turn (hence the foot brake must be used), but it should be a force that allows the wheels to burn to make the donuts or circles. Be careful doing this, as it is one of the easiest ways to lose control of the car, so it is only suitable for people with high driving skills.
Skid
Drifting is for me the best way to burn a tire. When we skid, we are braking so hard that the car loses traction and the wheels skid, burning up in the process due to kinetic energy. The best way to use a drift is to take very tight corners with the handbrake, this way the car will literally go into a skid, burning a bit of the wheel in the process. The best place to burn tires is asphalt, since if you do it on the ground you will raise dust, but the tires will not burn as much as it is a slightly softer ground. Drifting is a practice that requires you to practice a lot before you get it right, because considering it’s done by rally pros, it couldn’t be as easy as it seemed on TV.
Dangers of Burning Tire
Burning a tire or wheel, whatever you want to call it, has its great dangers, which must be known to avoid greater evils and to convince you that this burning wheel should not be common. The first danger we have already mentioned before, that is, road safety and fines. Burning a tire on public roads is illegal, so only do it on private land and on a closed circuit where it is allowed to do so, otherwise you will suffer a fine and you will endanger everyone.
The second danger we have of burning a tire is damaging the car, since by burning a tire and leaving the car stationary, we can end up damaging vital parts of the car such as the engine and axles. First of all, the engine suffers a lot, as the car is revving too much and therefore suffers more than going at low revs. As for the axis, it suffers because the kinetic energy of the static wheel directly affects it instead of the ground.
Finally you put yourself in danger, since you imagine that you lose control of the car and hit yourself. So if you want to burn a tire, do it in moderation and in safe places where it is allowed to do so.
