In these terrible times of crisis, reducing the car’s gasoline consumption has become an obsession for many Spaniards in 2016.

Even though oil prices are at historic lows and gasoline is worth the same now as it was 10 years ago, gasoline still takes up a large part of our economy every month, especially if you’re the type of person who likes to drive.

Cars normally consume between 5 and 12 liters of gasoline per 100 kilometers traveled, if you do 10 kilometers a day and gasoline costs 1.10 euros, you are spending 60 cents of gasoline in the best of cases and 1.20 in the worst of cases. These amounts seem small, however, if we multiply by 365 days that the year has, it would cost us about 219 euros for gasoline for the whole year.

If, for example, we were able to reduce the car’s gasoline consumption from 5 liters to 4 liters at 100, we would be saving more than 36.5 euros per year, an amount that is not negligible.

Best of all, it is  possible to reduce the car’s gasoline consumption in a simple and fast way, simply by following some advice and some indications, making the car spend less without spending hardly anything out of our pocket.

If you want to start saving money and also extend the life of your car, do not miss the information that I am going to offer you on how to reduce the gasoline consumption of the car.

Instructions to reduce the gasoline consumption of the car

  1. Drive efficiently: We define efficient driving as a way of driving that involves doing so to save fuel and avoid damaging the car. Surely you have heard about this topic at the driving school but you never gave it too much importance. Efficient driving can be done for free and can save you up to 2 liters per 100 in gasoline costs. Firstly, always drive in high gear to avoid revving the car, secondly, try not to hit acceleration or braking, since changes in pace make the car use too much fuel and finally, change gears smoothly and controlled, without hitting clutches for it.
  2. Do a tune-up: On some occasions, parts of our car, such as the fuel filter, will be damaged or dirty, which will cause us to spend more gasoline when driving. All this has an easy solution, that is, give the car a tune-up. Go to the nearest mechanical workshop and ask for a tune-up that includes a filter review, an exhaust pipe review and a general review of the entire car. Do not skimp on expenses in this regard, since in the end, as you have seen, cheap is expensive. Consider this a long-term investment not only of money, but of breakdowns, since a car with a good set-up will have fewer breakdowns than one with a bad set-up.
  3. Buy quality gasoline: Many people throw away the cheapest gasoline they can find, something understandable in these times of crisis. If you are one of these, I am sorry to tell you that once again, cheap is expensive. Cheap gasolines are consumed faster than expensive gasolines, this is because quality gasolines such as Repsol or BP contain a large number of additives that increase engine performance and the duration of gasoline. For all this, even if they are a few cents more expensive, in the end they make you spend less and, of course, save money. So if you want to spend less, always buy quality gasoline.

Tips to reduce car gasoline consumption

  • The change depends on the vehicle: This article is useful for lowering gasoline consumption, however, in cars that consume very little, you will hardly notice the change. If you have a car that uses 4 liters per 100, you will probably hardly notice the change, since it will drop to 3.5 at most, which is 0.60 per 100 kilometers. However, if you have an SUV that spends 14 liters per 100, with efficient driving the liters of consumption can be greatly lowered, even going down from 10 liters per 100, that is, that every 100 kilometers you are saving 4.40 euros in gasoline.
