Instructions for choosing a child’s car seat

  1. Observe your child: According to traffic regulations, we must use child seats for  children who are less than 135 cm tall. If your child is taller than that, they can use the normal seat belt. So watch your child, measure him and weigh him in a pharmacy, once you know your child’s weight you can know that the chairs are classified by 4 groups from highest to lowest according to your child’s height and weight.
  2. Group 0 children: Group 0 are babies, that is, they weigh at most 12 kilos and measure a few centimeters, these chairs are similar to baby carriers and strollers. We will have to place this chair in the opposite direction of the march to avoid damage by airbag and we will tie the baby to the chair with the belt of the chair itself.
  3. Children from group 1: Our son has grown a little but not too much, he is about 3 years old, weighs 15 kilos and measures one meter, for this we will use small retention seats from group 1. These seats have two installation methods, the first is in the front seat in the opposite direction of travel to avoid airbag damage and the second is in the back seats in the same direction of travel. The chair is tied to the car with the car’s seat belt and the baby is tied to the chair with the seat’s own belt.
  4. Group 2: Our son is getting older, he is 5 years old, he measures 1.15 and weighs 20 kilos, this time we will have to opt for a slightly higher chair that already has a backrest, we will put it facing the direction of travel and we will hold both with the vehicle’s own belt.
  5. Group 3: Our son is getting older, he already measures 1.25 and weighs 30 kilos at 8 years old, for these children the so-called booster cushions are used, which is like a kind of lower part of a seat that will increase the height of your child to that the normal seat belt is safe, they are placed in the direction of travel and it will be held with the usual seat belt of the car.

Tips for choosing a child’s car seat

  • Between 135 cm and 150 cm: Although they can now be legally fastened to the vehicle’s seat belt without any kind of seat or cushion, they are still quite short and could pose some risk to road safety. If you want to be sure, you can choose to continue using the booster cushion until your child reaches a height of 150 cm.
  • Old cars: Cars prior to 1990 in some cases do not have seat belts in the rear, this can pose a serious safety problem, in these cases it is recommended to install seat belts in the back or buy some type of chair that can hold to your son.
  • From 150 cm: Your child is ready to travel with a belt and without a cushion, however you still have to take into account certain considerations, first if your child is short, around 150 cm, it is better that they always sit on the back behind the car to prevent the front airbag from suffocating him, second make sure he always wears his seatbelt and that he sits with the correct posture of his back. Finally, make sure the belt is snug and well positioned at the level of the clavicle at the top and the hipbone at the bottom.
